Of characters from another dimension and opening...
As obscure as the title might sound, this entry is a very interesting observation about Aarti Sunder’s work and herself…..well, at least to me! The deep intimacy she shares with the characters that she has been drawing puzzled me at first. She seemed to believe that they were real and was very protective of them. Why would someone glorify doodles to the extent of personification? What...

The mess that was
Making the box was a messy affair. It not only looked like a carpenter’s workshop but it smelled like one too. The tool box was covered in sawdust.   And the paint got splashed all over the studio….

The box makers
Korou is helping me out in many ways as usual. This time, we make a good use of his carpentry skills. This is the making of Pandora’s box which is part of my work. I did some sawing and sand papered the surfaces.

Manisha Parek and her studio
The visit to Manisha Parek’s studio was refreshing. Her studio is located at a quiet little corner in Sukhdev Vihar. Her works are tactile and intimate and has an abstract quality that seems to seep in from music, or at least the mathematics of it.  Her studio was cozy with soft jazz music playing in the background. She offered us chhaas to drink and banana chips and biscuits to eat. We...

The mall, the refuge and the street.
Most of us inevitably notice the contrast between either sides of Press Enclave road, the malls on one side and the Khirki Village on the other. The days seem to pass without visitors/residents on either sides realising the existence of the other. The shoppers and mall enthusiasts  come to the malls with a sense of ritualistic discipline which seldom nudges them to take notice or engage with...

The hardworking one
Praveen sleeps early and gets up early in the morning, and he has a passion for yoga which, I suspect, surpasses his passion for his art, which is quite intense. He is the first one among us who had started working on his residency project. He is very proud to come from a printmaking background and strives to push its limits with every work that he creates. Currently, he is working on creating...

been horsing around
It’s been more fun to visit the other four’s studios than my own. Not that I feel lonely in my own studio. My studio has been like a magnet with people coming in and going out most of the time. It may have something to do with my cooler or the fact that my table and chair are arranged in a way that anyone passing by can see me.  Well, I decided to move around a little bit more and...

And so it starts,
Today is my fourth day at Khoj. I had expected myself to be shy and unapproachable during the first few days of the residency. But what do you know! I guess I am in one of my friendly and talkative phases. Everyone is getting comfortable with each other and our discussions have been very interesting and stimulating. We are five artists and a critic. Aarti from Mumbai, Pallavi from Delhi, Muthiah...
